Ginnie Springs, Florida

I have been so pumped today because of my new favorite blog at The Pioneer Woman. Scott Kelby recommended this blog this week and I finally got a chance to check it out  on this lazy, cold (for Florida), and rainy day. In a nutshell it’s written by Ree a city girl who found her “Marlboro Man” and is now living on a working ranch in Oklahoma with her man and 4 kids. She is a fantastic photographer and so inspiring because she is self taught and uses the same gear that I do! Ree had some great tips on photo editing and I decided to revisit some of my pictures that I took on New Year’s Day at Ginnie Springs in Florida.

Ginnie Springs is located in North Central Florida and is a set of several different springs that allow for excellent scuba diving and snorkeling. The water is a steady 72 degrees year round and crystal clear. Here are some links to learn more about Ginnie Springs: Underwater Florida - More Ginnie Springs Info

What’s wrong with this picture? Lets see - here I am with my red knit cap, jeans, and sweater looking into a spring with children swimming (my children). Only in Florida! The water may be 72 degrees but the air ain’t when you come out!

As you can tell, I’m not very good at guiding a canoe! It took me forever to turn this canoe around! The colors are really this vibrant. This is how it looked like out of the camera!

On the Suwannee River. I used Matt Kloskowsi’s Color Process pre-set for this picture. I really like it. I do think it’s time to clean my sensor…any tips on how?

Saw this little critter on my out. He’s obviously not on the South Beach diet!!!

Also I wanted to share that my D-300 is on it’s way. It shipped today. I was reading in this month’s POP Photography that when shooting RAW at high ISO’s with the D300 that NiK Capture will process the raw file without the noise versus another RAW converter. I’m curious to know what other D-300 users use to convert their RAW files…do you still use Lightroom or do you skip that and go to Nik Capture and if you do go into Nik Capture what is the fastest and easiest way to still get them into Lightroom? Any help would be much appreciated!

Thought for the day. Bring your camera to places that you may not think you will need it.  This evening we went to Paynes Prairie for their annual Stargazing fundraiser. They have a blues band, a big fire-pit where you can roast marshmallows and make smores, the astronomy club comes with telescopes to see the night sky, and hayrides. We were just 1 block from the house when I noticed that I left my camera at home. I made the decision to just go on because it was going to be so dark anyway, so what’s the point. This is one of those times I can kick my self in the a-s for not taking it. Plenty of opportunity for shots. They had men dressed up in authentic cowboy gear telling stories by the light of the bonfire, the blues band was surrounded by twinkling lights and candles….so many opportunities. Live and learn.

I currently use Lightroom and am totally happy with the images. I upgraded from a D50 to the D300, and boy, what a change. My images seem to pop more right out of the camera. I agree, it was hard to push the pay button, but after 2 months am I glad I did.

I really love the first picture! Beautiful colors and composition.

    Congrats on the d-300.

There are so many times I’ve wanted my camera, or a different lens, and I just don’t have it with me. Then when I have my camera, I never seem to have a shot. Ctach 22. But this is a great tip and I definitely need to carry my camera around with me more.
