I am on my way to Orlando today to volunteer at the Give Kids the World Resort. Give Kids The World Village (GKTW) is a 70-acre, non-profit resort in Central Florida that creates magical memories for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. GKTW provides accommodations at its whimsical resort, donated attractions tickets, meals and more for a week-long, cost-free fantasy vacation. I am going with our Youth Group to document their day.
I am still debating on which to buy first: the D300, the 17-55 2.8 OR the 24-70 2.8 and the 70-200 2.8. Aaron lent me has 18-200 VR lens so I can see all of the focal ranges. My friend Stacie from Baltimore just purchased her Canon 70-200 2.8 and I am lusting!! I can’t wait to see some of her photos using this lens.
I finally got my boxed version of Nik Software’s Color Efex Pro 3.0 filters and I am revisiting some pictures using some of the effects. So far I love the tonal adjustment and B/W conversion filters. Also their Glow filter allows me to adjust the saturation of the glow which creates the sepia effect on these photos. I plan on adding some before and after photos to show the power of these filters in the days to come.

(b/w conversion, Glamour Glow with saturation adjustment to bring out the warm tones)
Brilliance and Warmth and then applied Duplex for dream effect

B/W Conversion, Tonal Adjustment

If I was in your position, I would buy the D300 first then you get the opportunity to learn all the features of the camera then add more lens as you go. Plus if you plan on selling your old camera body then you can use it towards the cost of the D300.
