This is a picture of Buddy’s (the owner of the property) little granddaughter. She was helping her Grandfather by walking the grounds making sure there were no broken lights. She is so sweet!

Happy Boxing Day to all my friends in the U.K. and Australia. I am married to a Brit so we do celebrate Boxing Day at my house albeit just continuing from the previous day of eating and drinking. Check out this link to find out what Boxing Day is. It’s not the day you get rid of empty boxes.

My photography buddy and best friend Aaron just sent me the link to his Virtual Tours that he took at our Christmas Eve Holiday Lights Shoot (see below posts for more info). Check out the tours here

As mentioned in my previous post (minor accident with the tripod)- I need to purchase a professional tripod. I know I would have produced better photos had I had a tripod that worked. I could not get the angles I wanted to shoot and I just gave up in frustration. I don’t want that happening anymore. I might as well not even take the time to shoot if I’m not going to get the full experience and opportunities of getting it right in the camera.

I sent an email to Laurie Excell (she runs the equipment HELP desk over at NAPP and she is also one of the instructors at The Digital Landscape Workshop Series) to ask her advise on what to look for in a professional tripod. I explained to her my needs and that I was prepared to spend up to $600. She kindly responded (very quickly, thank you) with the following email. I hope you find it helpful. I sure did:

...As for a tripod ballhead combination.  The Gitzo 2500 series is the lightest I would recommend for you.  The new G lock system is well worth the extra cost bust, if your budge does not allow, you can look for one of the previous models either on closeout or used.  If you go with something in the 2500 series however, it will limit your ability to grow your system as time goes on.  You may find you need to upgrade your tripod somewhere down the road.My preference is the 3500 series….specifically the GT3540LS.  It can go to your height and will hold everything you currently have with room to grow.

Hands down the best ballhead is the Really Right Stuff BH-55.  Gitzo has their G1377M but by the time you buy the head and a clamp to use for quick release you are not that far off from the Really Right Stuff head.

I honestly would either look for a BH-55 and GT3540LS tripod use (both are new enough that might be a problem) or save up a few more pennies.  If you get the right tripod/head combo in the first place it will save you money in the long run and you won;t have to upgrade it for years if ever…”

I am putting $$$ aside and taking Laurie’s advise. Have a great day and keep on shooting!
