As mentioned in my previous post these are pictures I took on Christmas Eve at a private residence in Melrose, Florida. I mostly used my Sigma 10-20mm to take the landscape shots and once the light was gone I used my Nikkor 50mm 1.8 lens for the detail shots.

I totally read up on how to take those perfect holiday shots over at www.strobist.com and www.photojojo.com and even jotted down some settings in my notebook to take along. I also took notes from Idlytype’s Flickr set of Holiday Pictures he took in Baltimore on 34th Street. Amazing. You’ve got to check his photostream out. His holiday pictures were even featured in yesterday’s Baltimore Sun.
I was all prepared and very relaxed upon arriving for the photoshoot at about 5 p.m….until the dreaded tripod incident! I still have not broken down and purchased a professional tripod because of the costs…but I almost paid dearly for it tonight. The weight of my camera forced the tripod to tip over and the camera fell to the ground. I was so upset…but the camera did not break. I think Vincent Versace once said that “you are only as good as your weakest link”. Before I spend another dime on books or software, I am going to buy a tripod and tripod head…any suggestions?

Once the sun set we had about 10 minutes of perfect light to work with. The only tweaking I did with these photos were in Lightroom. I adjusted the white balance and used Tungsent and brought more of the blues out. I also added a moderate S curve to bring out the contrast.
