Photographers that Inspire – Joe McNally/The Moment it Clicks

Joe McNally is one of Nikon’s Legends behind the Lens. His new book entitled The Moment it Clicks is due out at anytime. The book highlights Joe’s distinguished photography career as One of the Most Important People in Photography.  It is more than just a coffee table book but a collection of these important photos,  the stories behind those photos, and the techniques used to make those photos. I don’t think this is going to be one that just stays on the coffee table, but in the classroom, and in your  camera bag as well!  I know because I was one of the first to have the opportunity to preview this book presented by Joe himself.

Scott Kelby who was key in getting this book started has written a detailed overview of this book. Here is the link.

I met Joe McNally at DLWS Cape Cod last October. I am ashamed to share this about myself  but up until the Cape Cod workshop, I  had no idea who Joe McNally was by name  other than the photographer who did the Nikon “Speed of Light” Instructional DVD for the Nikon Creative Lighting System .   I  made the connection  at the opening of the DLWS Workshop when all the instructors/photographers introduced themselves and their body of work.  Joe shared with us his extremely  powerful portfolio – that left me: inspired, motivated, helpless, hopeful, and overwhelmed.

Many of the highlights of this DLWS workshop was Joe’s instruction on flash in the classroom and in the field. He even gave us a primer on taking candids and people shots. It was the kick in the ass I needed to take this picture below of the standard poodles. Until  then..I would have been too  shy to approach this woman. This is one of my favorite shots from the workshop.  Thank you Joe

We were very fortunate to have Joe narrarate some of  his stories from  “The Moment it Clicks”  as he was in the process of finalizing his book for press at the time of the workshop. During the final hours of the DLWS workshop Joe presented us a slide-show of some of the pictures from the book  and narrated  the stories that went with them.   It was facinating to hear the back story AND how he technically put the shots together.

Check out Joe McNally’s Nikon web site that includes a short video on the “Making” of the stories from The Moment it Clicks. The video highlights some of Joe’s instruction at DLWS. You can also see what Joe has in his camera bag.  Check out Joe McNally with Scott Kelby in Hawaii doing a fantastic sunset shoot – check it out here.

If you have any questions about Moose Peterson’s DLWS (Digital Landscape Workshop) please feel free to send me an email or leave a comment. You can see some of the photographs I took while at DLWS Cape Cod at my Flickr Set here. My set also includes pictures of Joe, Scott Kelby, Moose Peterson, and Laurie Excel. They were ALL fantastic and inspiring. Check out Joe McNally’s web page here to learn more about the man behind the lens!
